This cover is brilliant, btw! It’s so gorgeous!

When your average, 16-year old loser, Scott Tyler, meets the beautiful and mysterious Aubrey Jones, he learns he’s not so average after all. He’s a ‘Shifter’. And that means he has the power to undo any decision he’s ever made. At first, he thinks the power to shift is pretty cool. But as his world starts to unravel around him he realises that each time he uses his power, it has consequences; terrible unforeseen consequences. Shifting is going to get him killed.

In a world where everything can change with a thought, Scott has to decide where he stands.

When you read a book in one sitting, you know you’re onto a winner.

I picked up Shift quite shortly after meeting Kim at a book launch a few months ago. It was a book that I was actually already aware of in the blogosphere and, from what I could tell, seemed right up my street.

I started reading this book on the train from Kings Cross to Sheffield when I was going to with my parter to stay at his parents. I didn’t know what to expect. Faye from A Daydreamer’s Thoughts told me it was brilliant and I had to read it so I thought I would give it a go. 312 pages later I am sat agape, cursing myself for not bringing the sequel with me to read immediately.

The world that Kim has created, though very much based in our own, is so rich and interesting. You don’t get a chance to breathe as she plunges you into a world of interesting characters (who you are unsure whether or not you can trust) and incredibly exciting action sequences. The different kinds of shifters, the different rules that they follow were all so fascinating to me that I just couldn’t put this book down. It was the most anti-social train journey of my life.

In the end I gave this book 4.5 stars. The half star it lost was because, at the beginning, the idea of Shifting wasn’t clear to me and, when Scott Shifted, I got very confused. I know that it might have been the idea so that we can discover more about the story and the logistics behind shifting as we go along, but I wasn’t taken with it. But once the initial Shifting had passed I was so into this story. If you want an exciting action adventure story with a strong sci-fi edge, this is for you.
