George on Your Writing Soundtrack

Hello dear sweet lovelies!

Writing with music is a funny old beast isn’t it? When writing my NaNoWriMo novel last year (2013) I found myself listening to a lot of soundtracks. the Harry Potter film soundtracks, The Dark Knight Rises and even The Lord of the Rings. These blockbuster soundtracks with soaring strings and epic drumbeats (TDKR is good for that) really gets you through moments in your book. It makes it all a little more visual, as if it isn’t the soundtrack to Harry, Ron and Hermione’s adventure, but that of your own characters.

I always struggle to write with an album that has singers on it. I find that I get distracted by their voices and, if I know it well enough, I will start miming emphatically to it. (This is often awkward when you are sitting in the back corner of a Starbucks and catch yourself doing it. So very awkward!) When I was editing on Sunday Morning, I did most of it in absolute silence because I needed to concentrate on the words.

That being said, I am currently writing my Creative Writing Dissertation (a 6,000 word piece) for my University course and have discovered All This Bad Blood the new album from Bastille. It is, somehow, managing to get me through what is quite possibly the most stilted and ugly 6,000 words of my life. It is so bloody brilliant and different to everything else that I listen to. I am normally into Top 40 stuff with a cheeky bit of pop/rock on the side which you can’t really write to because you’re too busy miming that “you’d better Work Bitch!” Just me? Alright.

What music do you write to? Tell all below! 🙂

Much love!

  1. I used to listen to specific music while writing, now less so. But I usually find certain songs that could theoretically be part of the soundtrack of the script I’m writing when I do.

That’s an interesting way to look at it actually. I can’t remember who it was, but there was an author who compiled a whole playlist on Spotify that was the soundtrack to their particular novel! Pretty cool idea! 🙂

  2. I like the soundtrack to Assassin’s Creed 4. I know that sounds pretty random but it’s an awesome adventure-sounding soundtrack!

Whatever works for you!! Soundtracks are the best for sure! No words to distract! 🙂
